What Could You Test Next? Design a Small Career Experiment Before You Make a Big Move

Turn an uncertain career possibility into a small, practical test that produces real-world evidence.

You do not have to make a major career move to learn whether a direction deserves one.

You may have a direction you want to explore, but not enough information to know whether it is a good fit or worth a major commitment.

Research and reflection can help, but they cannot tell you everything. You may still wonder whether you would enjoy the everyday work, whether your capabilities would be valued in a different setting, what you would need to learn, or whether the opportunity you imagine actually exists.

This live, two-hour virtual workshop helps you replace prediction with investigation. You will design a small, bounded career experiment that allows you to learn before making a costly or difficult-to-reverse move.

You will not complete the experiment during the workshop. You will leave with a responsible, practical plan you can carry out afterward.

What is a Career Probe?

A Career Probe is a small, deliberate action designed to answer a career question using real-world evidence.

It is not a commitment to change careers, accept a new role, return to school, or launch a major project. It brings one important assumption into contact with reality while limiting the time, cost, exposure, and commitment involved.

Depending on your question, your probe might involve a focused conversation, a short observation, a small contribution, a prototype, or another carefully bounded action.

The purpose is not to prove that your preferred direction is right. It is to make the situation more legible so you can decide what to investigate or do next.

What you will do

Using LEGO® Serious Play® model-building, guided reflection, and the Career Probe Field Guide, you will:

• Choose a career question or possibility that would benefit from real-world evidence
• Identify the assumption beneath that question
• Turn the assumption into a specific, testable expectation
• Design the smallest real action capable of producing meaningful information
• Decide what supporting, challenging, and unexpected evidence you will notice
• Set boundaries for time, cost, exposure, commitment, and permissions
• Establish a stopping point so the probe does not become an open-ended obligation
• Plan how you will record what happens, interpret the evidence, and choose a response

You do not need to arrive with a fully developed experiment. The workshop will help you identify a useful question and design an appropriate test. There is no correct way to build, and no artistic or LEGO-building skill is required. The meaning comes from the story you give your model, not from what it looks like.

What you will take with you

By the end of the workshop, you will have:

• A clearly framed career question
• A testable expectation instead of a vague hope or fear
• A small, bounded Career Probe you can carry out after the workshop
• A practical plan for the evidence you will collect
• Defined limits and a clear stopping point
• A framework for interpreting what you learn and deciding what to do next

You will not leave with a final verdict about your career. You will leave with a responsible way to learn what thinking and prediction alone cannot tell you.

How much will you need to share?

Career questions can be personal. You will be invited to explain the meaning of your models and receive structured reflection, but you decide how much personal detail you want to share.

You will not be asked to defend your career idea or persuade anyone that it is the right choice.

Materials

You will need your own LEGO pieces or a comparable collection of building pieces. Purchasing the recommended LEGO® Serious Play® Starter Kit is the simplest option, but you may use your own varied collection of bricks, figures, connectors, and movable or symbolic pieces.

Take this workshop on its own

This is the fourth workshop in a four-part series for navigating nonlinear career change. It delivers a complete experiment-design experience on its own. You do not need to complete the earlier workshops or commit to the full series to participate.

If you completed Workshop 3, you may bring forward a possibility you identified there. If you are beginning with this workshop, you will identify a useful career question or direction to test during the session.

The complete series helps you understand what is making movement difficult, recognize the capabilities you can carry forward, explore adjacent possibilities, and design a small experiment to test what comes next.
